12.75 year-old Boy Seeking Books of Sport and Adventure

Jonah is an almost teenager who loves the Cubs, playing with his dog and playing video and board games. The thing he likes most about reading is that you can go at your own pace and do it whenever you have the time. However, he says that when a book is slow reading can be boring, especially when you are a slower reader. When he is looking for a book to read, he looks for sports books, graphic novels and books filled with adventure. He will also pick up a book if his friends are reading it and it looks good.

I am excited to help Jonah with a few personalized picks. To help me help him, I asked Jonah to share three of his favorite books and one he was not so crazy about. Here are his favorites:

Nine-year-old girl seeks Classic Heroines

Alea is a smart, responsible and creative nine-year-old who is currently in 3rd grade. She is a reader. She loves getting lost in a story. She especially likes funny stories and books that help her learn what life was like “back then.” She does not appreciate it when characters use words like “OMG” and “What the heck?” When she’s not reading, Alea loves ballet, playing outside and snuggling with her mom. When asked if there was anything else she would like to say about books and reading, she gave the encouragement to “Read on!” She is my kind of girl.

I am excited to give Alea a few personalized picks. To help me help her, I asked Alea to share three of her favorite books and one she was not so crazy about. Here are her favorites:

Eleven-year-old Boy Seeking Page-Turning, True-to-Life Stories

Drew is a eleven-year-old boy who loves to be outdoors. Some of his favorite things include:  nerf wars, exploring, rip-sticking and jumping on the trampoline. Drew doesn’t love reading, but he doesn’t hate it either. As his mom says, “he is growing in his like of it.” A slower reader by nature, Drew’s favorite books draw him in right away with a strong hook. He leans towards nonfiction and historical fiction and if a book looks too big or has too small of print he has a hard time starting it.

Drew’s mom asked me for a few personalized picks. To help me help him, I asked Drew to share three of his favorite books and one he was not so crazy about. Here are his favorites:

First Grade Girl Seeking Funny Books

Natalie is a friendly, fun-loving seven year old. Currently in first grade, she enjoys reading (especially with her mommy). However, she does not like being stuck in a reading group at school when it’s not her turn to read. Boring!

Some of Natalie’s favorite things to do outside of reading is drawing, playing with friends and her siblings, and playing with dolls, especially Barbies. Speaking of which, Barbie books are some of her favorites but if you hand her a Clifford book, she will most likely respond with a "no thank you."

Natalie’s mom asked me for a few personalized picks. To help me help her, I asked Natalie to share three of her favorite books and one she was not so crazy about. Here are her favorites:

12-year-old Boy Seeking Books with Adventure and Humor

Simon is a fun-loving 12-year old boy who loves Mario, joking around with his friends and bacon. He also loves graphic novels and comics which he would like to read more of, but of which his mom would like him to read less.

When he is not reading comics, books filled with mystery and adventure are his favorite. He doesn’t like fancy words in the books he reads and would prefer word choices that are plain and simple, but funny... kind of like Garfield (his example).

Simon doesn’t like reading unless it is a really good book that he is interested in. He is a slow reader and if he doesn’t like the book, he is a really slow reader. Oftentimes, he will read the first few pages of a book he finds around the house to see if he likes it, if he does, he will try to remember to read it later when he is looking for a new book to read.

Simon asked me for a few personalized picks. To help me help him, I asked him to share three of his favorite books and one he was not so crazy about. Here are his favorites:

Adventure-loving Girl Seeking Books

Faye is a curious, adventurous nine year old. She is always on the look out for new friends, but can sometimes be a little shy when it comes to saying the first hello. When it comes to her reading life, she likes to reserve the more challenging chapter books for summertime and save easier books for when school is in session. Reading calms her down. Small fonts, on the other hand, are annoying. If a book has too small of font, she will stop reading it. Period.

Faye asked me for a few personalized picks. To help me help her, I asked her to share three of her favorite books and one she was not so crazy about. Here are her favorites...
