The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world.

When the Herdmans push their way into the annual Christmas pageant, everyone is absolutely certain that it will be the worst Christmas pageant ever. After all, the Herdmans are about the worst kids ever. They are mean, unruly and bully everyone to get their own way. Everyone is shocked that they want to be in the Christmas pageant, especially since none of them have ever heard the story. But take over they do, and what happens next surprises everyone.

This is a short chapter book (just over 100 pages) that packs a punch. It is a fun story to read out loud, is a relatively quick read, laugh out loud funny, and just might make you cry at the end for all the right reasons.  If you haven’t read it yet, go get yourself a copy. There is a picture book version of the story as well, which is good, but not as good as the original. If you only read one Christmas book this year, make it this one.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever has become a holiday tradition at our house. I look forward to reading it out loud to our kids every year. And every year, I find myself crying over the final pages as the Herdmans experience the Christmas story for the first time and share it in a new and profound way with everyone listening in. Far from ruining the pageant, the Herdmans truly make it the best Christmas pageant ever.
